1994 Porsche 964 Turbo 3.6-liter Coupe

The 911 is a timeless design icon. In Turbo guise, it is a car that remains both infamous and immortal. The simple yet memorable form, now in its 35th year, lives on as the definitive sports car of the 1970s and 80s.

Porsche began experimenting with turbo technology, in earnest, as early as the late 1960s on many of their racing chassis. Around 1975, Porsche took a road-going Carrera with a 3.0-liter RSR motor and added a KKK turbocharger. To cope with the increased weight and power, the body was flared and a ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler was added to the rear. The project was titled type 930. In road trim, the powerful motor delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph.The 4-speed gearbox transported the car to 60mph from a standstill in an impressive five seconds. The new model would go on sale in the winter of that year.

In an evolving spirit, the 930 improved as time went on. Notably in 1978, the motor enlarged to a 3.3-liter and gained an intercooler. The power increased to 300bhp with a top speed of 165mph. Despite the company’s push to transition into a mostly transaxle layout, 930s sold in the thousands. In 1989 the classic 911 chassis and its derivative 930 & 911 Turbo would retire to make way for the newcomer type 964.

The type 964 is the ultimate incarnation of the 911 form. One of the last models produced under the direction of Ferry Porsche before his retirement, it is the last 911 built before a factory production-overhaul by Toyota (implemented in full with the 993). With a face-lift but retaining that familiar shape, the 964 was a major step forward in the development of the 911 lineage. The naturally aspirated car, a Carrera 4 to start, enjoyed a 3.6-liter, 247bhp flat-six motor. Its four-wheel drive system, a technology from the 959, was the first on a series-production 911. It greatly influenced the new Carrera’s chassis and suspension. With an extensive work-over mechanically, over 85% of parts used were claimed as entirely brand new.

The Turbo form, introduced in 1991, returned after a long absence from the price list. In its original form, it took on a 3.3-liter unit with power increased to 320bhp. Anti-lock brakes, power-assisted steering and a G50 5-speed gearbox were all standard. In the fall of 1992, the 964 Turbo received an advanced 3.6-liter M64 motor. Now featuring a K27 KKK turbocharger, the car produced a mighty 355bhp and 384lbs of torque. Blindingly quick indeed, contemporary reports by Car & Driver established the 0-60mph time of a scant four seconds and a top speed of 174mph.

Chassis RS480255, a 3.6-liter Turbo, is one of the last built for the North American market. An original Arizona car, chassis RS480255 relocated to California soon into its life under the care of an elderly collector who cared for it as an eminent collectable. Our current owner acquired the car in 2017 and today, it resides around Las Vegas. This 964 is offered with its original owner’s manual, maintenance book, previous invoices, warranty card, a dealer directory, sales literature, original tools and a Porsche COA.

With fewer than 1,500 built globally, the 964 3.6-liter makes for one of the rarest and most sought-after Porsches since the 959. An exceptional performance car, even today, few can match the ferocity of this now near quarter of a century old design. Chassis RS480255, in an era-defining color with less than 40K miles, represents a unique opportunity to acquire an original and authentic motoring icon.

Exterior

Amazon Green, the color on this Turbo, represents one of the truly great colors of the 964/ 968 Era. As time passes and the once rare colors are presented in a modern light on today’s 991 and 992s, Amazon Green, a color which accentuates the curves of the wide body beautifully, remains seldom seen. Externally, the paint presents beautifully, as do the coveted Speedline three-piece anodized wheels with the optional Porsche crest rim caps. A factory optioned rear window washing system was installed on the car from new.

Interior

Inside we see a full leather Cashmere Beige interior. Notably the root wood accents on the dashboard, gear level and emergency brake handle are evidence of a Porsche which was created at the request of its owner and not produced to fulfill a balance sheet. The original Cashmere Beige and Black leather interior was modified by a previous owner. The current owner had the interior upholstery corrected back to its original color. The interior sports the factory optioned electric sunroof which only adds to the extreme rarity of the options seen on the interior of this car.

Engine Drive Train

With less than 40,000 miles on the odometer this powerful 3.6-liter Porsche is the ultimate driving machine of the 1990’s. This particular car came standard with anti-lock brakes, power assisted steering and a 5-speed gearbox. Having lived its life on the West Coast the engine bay, chassis and components have been maintained in original preservation condition. All original stickers and badging have been maintained.

Trunk and Storage Compartment

The trunk contains the original tools, spare wheel and jack. The optional 6-disc CD changer has been maintained and is accessed in the trunk. The carpet is original and appears in perfectly preserved condition.

Documentation and Spares

This 964 is offered with its original owner’s manual, maintenance book, previous invoices, warranty card, a dealer directory, sales literature, original tools and a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
