1934 Packard Super Eight 1104 Coupe Roadster

Continuing to epitomize America’s fine-car market during the early 1930s, Packard’s Eleventh Series models continue to rank among the company’s finest. Debuted in August 1933, they featured a wide range of handsomely styled bodies combining Raymond Dietrich’s foundational design work and masterfully streamlined flourishes by international award-winning designer Alexis de Sakhnoffsky. Positioned between the Eight and Twelve lines, the Super Eight was offered along three variations with 21 available body styles: Model 1103 on the 134-7/8” wheelbase, Model 1104 on the 141-7/8” wheelbase chassis and Model 1105 on the 146-7/8” wheelbase length. Just 1,920 Super Eights were produced for the Eleventh Series total and all survivors are sought today for their excellent design, engineering, and driving dynamics, making them ideal for shows and classic touring events.

According to the cowl tag, this splendid 1934 Packard Super Eight Model 1104 Coupe Roadster was delivered new on April 16, 1934 via famed Los Angeles Packard dealer Earle C. Anthony. The bodylines are excellent and uncluttered with the unusual rear-mounted spare tire yielding a wonderfully clean and sporting profile view. Known provenance dates to the early 1980s, when this Super Eight Coupe Roadster was acquired by Seattle, Washington-based Packard collector Larry Justice, who exhibited it at the 1985 CCCA Annual Meeting in Bellevue, Washington, earning a perfect 100-point score and CCCA Senior Badge no. 1151. The following year, this dashing Super Eight completed the CCCA Pacific Northwest CARavan tour. Next, the Super Eight passed through fellow Seattle collector John Kane in 2008 to fellow Washington-based collector, Neil DeAtley, who completed the 1,600-mile 2010 Pebble Beach Motoring Classic® with it. The current owner acquired the dashing Super Eight from DeAtley in early 2018.

Exterior

The Super Eight is understood to have been restored under Larry Justice and continues to present very well in its Cream and Burgundy finish, accented by beautifully sculpted Art Deco headlamps and shiny chrome bumpers. Accessories include chrome wire wheels mounting period style white sidewall tires, plus dual Trippe driving lights, dual chrome horns, electric windshield wipers, fold-out vent windows, and a metal cover for the rear-mounted spare assembly.

Interior

Trimmed in Burgundy leather upholstery and matching carpeting, the Super Eight’s passenger compartment remains inviting notwithstanding some aging and wear noted to the seating surfaces and lower door-panel corners. Rich wooden door caps and a burled wood dashboard with Packard’s signature instrument cluster and locking glove box heighten appeal. Roll-up side windows provide snug all-weather motoring with the convertible top raised. Lowered in fair weather, the top folds flush with the car’s Burgundy beltline rib, beneath a Tan canvas boot cover. The jaunty rumble seat is upholstered to match the passenger compartment and appears little used.

Engine and Drive Train

Underneath the long, shuttered hood resides Packard’s 385 CI Super Eight inline eight-cylinder L-head engine, developing 145 rated horsepower with a single Stromberg downdraft-type carburetor, mated to a proper three-speed manual transmission with floor-mounted shifter. The factory data plate remains in place, confirming the original delivery details. Both the engine and underhood area appear correct and complete with proper components and finishes present, including Bijur central chassis lubrication.
